Clinical Observation of Fracture ?Dislocation of the Spine


Abstract
Clinical analysis was done for 58 cases of fracture-dislocation of the spine admitted to Chunbuk Medical Center and our Department during recent four years. The results were as follows;
1) Of the total 58 cases, male and female were 53 and 5 respectively and in more than half of all (51. 8%) the injury involved person between 30 and 49 years of age.
2) The site of most frequent involvement was thoraco-lumbar region (58.6%).
3) Prime etiological factors in order were; fall down from height (32 cases), traffic accident (14), trauma by external force (7) and lifting a heavy weight (4).
4) Chief complaints at the time of admission were motor paralysis, back pain and urinary disturbances in most cases but occasional abdominal pain (3 cases).
5) Of the 58 cases, 38 were managed by conservative treatment, 20 by surgically and 6 by traction.
Regardless of the treatment method, surgical or conservative, the result of inco¡þmplete paralysis was better than complete, indicating that the initial lesion to the cord seemed to play decisive role for the outcome.
